SANDY, Utah (Friday, September 4, 2026) – Utah Royals FC (12-8-3, 39 points, 3rd NWSL) lost a heartbreaker to Boston Legacy FC (6-12-5, 23 points, 15th NWSL) on Friday night, conceding late to fall 2-1 at America First Field.
Royals Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets made only one personnel change to the first XI following the 2-1 comeback win at Orlando Pride, starting Narumi at the pivot in place of Ana Tejada, who was suspended due to caution accumulation. Mina Tanaka made her 50th Royals appearance on Friday, while Kate Del Fava played her 7,200th straight minute, surpassing Katie Atkinson (2021-25 with Louisville) for the 2nd-longest streak in league history behind Kaleigh Kurtz’s active streak.
The visitors got on the board quickly on Saturday, capitalizing on a deflected shot by Barbara Olivieri that bounced off the post. Aissata Traoré reacted promptly, scoring with an outstretched left-footed finish in the 11th minute for a 1-0 lead.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Royals answered as Mandy McGlynn found the run of Kiana Palacios with a ball that soared over every player on the field. After beating the last defender for pace, Palacios scored with an impressive first-time finish to the back post, levelling the encounter at 1-1. The goal was Palacios’ fourth of the season, and was made possible by McGlynn’s second assist in a Royals kit. There have only been four keeper assists this NWSL season, and on Friday, McGlynn joined Kailen Sheridan as the only goalkeepers to record two assists.
The Royals continued to apply pressure late in the first half in search of a go-ahead goal. Utah came closest just before the halftime whistle, when Palacios rattled the crossbar with a thundering strike from just outside the box.
Solid defense on both sides didn’t allow for many good chances throughout the second half. It wasn’t until the closing minutes when the visitors stole a victory, scoring with an unmarked header at the backpost in the 86th minute. Utah was unable to get a late equalizer and dropped the full three points at home for the first time since July 29 against Washington.
Looking to bounce back, the Royals are back on the road next week, travelling to face the Houston Dash on Saturday, September 12, at Shell Energy Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:45 p.m. MT, with the match available to stream on ION.

BOS: Aissata Traoré (Unassisted) 11’: Olivieri’s shot on goal was deflected by Kate Del Fava onto the left post. Traoré got to the rebound and scored with a left-footed shot to the middle of the goal.
UTA: Kiana Palacios (Mandy McGlynn) 17’: McGlynn played a long, lofting pass from the top of her box that found the run of Palacios. From a tough angle, Palacios finished with a right-footed shot to the back post.
BOS: Aleigh Gambone (Nicki Hernandez) 86’: Near the left sideline, Hernandez whipped in a cross to the backpost that fell to an unmarked Gambone. She finished calmly with a powerful header.
