SAN DIEGO, California (Friday, November 6, 2026) – Utah Royals FC (14-11-5, 47 points, 7th NWSL) made history on Friday night, putting together a complete team performance to prevail 1-0 over No. 2 seed San Diego Wave (18-8-4, 58 points, 2nd NWSL) at Snapdragon Stadium. The major upset was Utah’s first-ever win against the Wave in the Club’s three-year history, and with the victory, the Royals will advance to their first-ever NWSL Championship semifinals.
Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets made no changes to the starting XI for the Royals’ playoff debut, repeating the same lineup that closed out the season in a 2-0 loss to NWSL Shield Champions Gotham FC. The bench saw two personnel changes, with Cece Delzer and Narumi available again after recovering from injuries in the regular season finale.
San Diego quickly showed why it finished the season with seven games unbeaten, creating multiple quality chances early in the match. In the 5th minute, Melanie Barcenas fired an uncontested header from the penalty spot toward goal, but was denied by a sensational save by Mandy McGlynn who got low to parry the ball. Soon after, McGlynn was called to action again, deflecting a powerful shot by Lia Godfrey with a strong, outstretched right hand.
In the 13th minute, Utah showed its attacking power, nearly converting on a rapid counter attack. Paige Cronin surged up the right side of the field, crossing a ball into the box that rolled onto an open Cloé Lacasse. The Canadian international connected with her right foot, but was unable to convert, missing just high of the far post. The Royals continued to press for an opener with high intensity, and came incredibly close in the 16th minute after Nuria Rábano anticipated a pass and stole the ball high into San Diego’s half. Utah’s Spanish left-back looked up and found the run of Cronin, who rifled a shot that looked destined for the top of the net. This time, it was Sandra Paños that made the highlight reel save, diving to deny Cronin with a spectacular left-handed intervention.
Despite the Wave’s best efforts, including forcing an eye-popping double-save off the line by Kate Del Fava and Cronin, the visitors got on the board first in San Diego. At the half hour mark, Utah shocked the fans in Snapdragon Stadium, capping off a well-worked team move with a history-making goal from Kiana Palacios. Jameese Joseph played the ball wide to Lacasse, who crossed the ball into Palacios who was waiting eagerly at the penalty spot. After taking a touch with her right foot, the Mexican international turned and fired with her left, slotting the ball into the right-side, netting for a 1-0 lead. The goal ended Utah’s 300-minute goalless streak, and Palacios etched her name in history by becoming the player that scored Utah’s first-ever playoff goal.

After a chaotic, back-and-forth half that gave San Diego and Utah fans alike no time to breathe, the Royals carried a narrow lead into the break.
The second half kicked off exactly where the first left off - with both teams knocking on the door. In the 50th minute, Palacios nearly scored her second, cutting onto her left foot before hitting a curling shot that missed just wide of the far post. Kenza Dali immediately responded for San Diego, creating a chance from inside the box that would’ve found the net if not for a sliding block from Miyabi. In the 67th minute, the Japanese international nearly doubled her impact with a goal on the other side, getting into a good position in the box but missing her shot above the crossbar.
As the enthralling match entered its final stages, San Diego pushed for an equalizer. In the 77th minute, Gia Corley drove up the left flank, seemingly mis-hitting a cross that was headed straight for the top left corner. Once again, the former USWNT keeper McGlynn made a stunning save, readjusting before diving to reject the ball with her right hand.
As the clock hit 90, the referee added a long seven minutes of stoppage time, giving the hosts one final chance to take the match to overtime. While every passing second was agonizing for fans, the players on the field were unfazed. Utah closed out its defensive masterclass in style, with the forwards pressing high, midfielders keeping shape, defenders making clearances, and McGlynn reeling in every ball that came her way. The Royals held San Diego scoreless at home for the first time since July 26, and as the referee blew the final whistle, Utah’s bench cleared as they rushed the field to celebrate history. It was a game that perfectly encapsulated the determination, resilience, and unity that has defined the 2026 Royals and a performance that sent a message to the rest of the league: Utah is here to stay.

Advancing to the semifinals for the first time, Utah Royals FC will travel to take on the victor of the quarterfinal matchup between Portland Thorns FC and the Washington Spirit next weekend.
