More Than a Contract: The Passion Behind Mina Tanaka’s Extension

Few players strike fear into defenders the way Mina Tanaka does. With a determination, relentless energy and a goal-scoring instinct for which few compare, Tanaka has impressed fans with her play and brought a fresh perspective to the role of a forward. And now, she’s here to stay. Utah Royals FC announced today that the Japanese star has signed an extension through 2028, solidifying her place at the heart of the club’s ambitions for the years to come.

Tanaka enjoyed playing soccer at the highest level in Japan but also wanted more, and wanted to explore the opportunity of playing overseas. Initially she took the initiative to reach out to the Royals herself, curious to explore what opportunities or support they might have to offer.

“I was playing in Japan and I wanted to become a champion at the World Cup and Olympic level as a representative of Japan so I really wanted to play overseas to gain experience. When I found the Royals, I received a really good offer I felt their passion and I knew it was where I wanted to come to play.”

Tanaka arrived at URFC in July 2024 as a marquee free agent from Kobe Leonessa, where her scoring record in Japan’s WE League was nothing short of prolific, 37 goals in 58 appearances. When asked why she chose Utah as her first home in the NWSL, Tanaka said, “I feel a lot of respect as a player from this organization, also they were the first team that didn’t have a championship, we were low in the standings and as a player I wanted to be a part of this story where we do become champions and grow.”

Her impact in Utah was immediate. This year, she dazzled on the international stage as well, earning MVP honors at the 2025 SheBelieves Cup by racking up 4 goals and 3 assists in just three matches, carrying Japan to the title. Known for her deadly finishing, she claimed the Nadeshiko League golden boot four years running (2016–2019), and her rocket from 34 yards out against Orlando Pride in Week 14, nominated for Goal of the Week, reminded everyone that she doesn’t just score goals; she crafts masterpieces.

Tanaka’s love for soccer started long before the accolades and packed stadiums. One of her earliest memories is simply tagging along to her older brother’s practices, a young girl with a big curiosity for the sport.

“When I was a kid I would go to my brother’s soccer practices. When I went, I would play with the ball, try kicking it and sometimes it went into the goal. I got a lot of praise for doing that which made me really proud and that’s how I started playing soccer.” That feeling of joy, recognition, and possibility sparked a passion that’s driven her ever since.

The move to the NWSL wasn’t without its adjustments for Tanaka, who came from a more possession-oriented style of play in Japan’s WE League. The pace, physicality, and end-to-end action of the NWSL demanded a different rhythm and quicker transitions. It was a challenge, but one she embraced fully.

“The biggest difference is the intensity and that’s what I was looking for and a big part of why I came. Also, there’s the speed at which players chase every goal and the general competition in the NWSL that I felt was very high.” That willingness to adapt has already paid off, as she continues to thrive in the league’s demanding environment while bringing her own brand of sharp, calculated play to every match.

Her decision to stay goes beyond the pitch. “Right now we don’t have the results. I can really feel that as we continue to play matches we’re climbing our way up and in the next three years of my contract I feel very strongly that we can get to the top with this team.” Tanaka said. “That’s because I love this club and I really love the teammates who are fighting alongside me. And the thought - “I want to be champions with this team, with these teammates” is really powerful to me.”

That drive, that sense of belonging, is what has made her a fan favorite and a leader on this team. Tanaka’s extension with the Royals isn’t just about staying, it’s about investing in something bigger. For her, Utah has become more than a stop in her career; it’s a home, a challenge, and a launching pad for what she wants to become.

“Naturally I want to be opening up scoring opportunities and of course getting a lot of goals myself.” she said. “Actually, one of the differences between playing in America compared to Japan is that, in this league, the shooting rate from outside of the penalty box is really high and so I want to become a player who can make those shots.” That drive for growth, combined with her belief in the club’s direction, made the decision to stay an easy one.

Tanaka has fully embraced the environment both on and off the field. From the passionate fanbase to the stunning mountain views, she’s found energy in the elevation, quite literally. She’s even noted how training at altitude has helped her performance on the road. “It makes playing at other stadiums feel easier,” she shared with a smile.

Staying in Utah wasn’t just a professional decision, it was a personal one. From the moment she arrived, Tanaka felt something different about the club, a genuine sense of connection that extended far beyond the pitch.

“The people on this team and of course the fans too, everyone is so kind. Everyone respects one another, they’re accepting of one another and they find each others strengths, I think from the bottom of my heart I’ve been able to join a really good team and this is my way of giving back, I’d like to give back.” That culture of respect, inclusivity, and shared ambition made the decision to sign an extension through 2028 feel less like a choice and more like a natural next step.

One of the things that’s meant the most to Tanaka has been the growing support from the fanbase. She’s taken notice of the rise in jerseys bearing her name, and the handmade signs that appear in the crowd week after week. Seeing that kind of love and recognition in a new country, with a new language and culture, has only deepened her bond with the team and the city.

It’s more than just appreciation, it’s motivation. Every cheer, every banner, every young fan wearing her number is a reminder of why she plays. And for Tanaka, it’s a privilege to return that energy by continuing to give her all for Utah Royals FC.

With her future in Utah secured through 2028, Tanaka is more motivated than ever to help take URFC to the next level, this extension is her way of giving back and a motivator to improve personally and as a team. Her journey with the club is just beginning, and she’s eager to keep building something lasting on the field.

“I’ll keep aiming for goals and I want to see the stadium full. To achieve that we need to get results and become champions,” she said. “It’s going to be great and I really appreciate the continued support of the fans.”

With her talent and drive Tanaka isn't just aiming to be a star, she’s here to make history. But more than anything, it’s the sense of possibility that excites her, being part of a young club and building something special. As URFC continues to grow and evolve, Tanaka is all in and ready to lead, ready to adapt, and ready to bring championships to Utah.
