On a historic afternoon at America First Field, Utah Royals FC continued its remarkable 2026 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Denver Summit FC in front of 19,274 fans, extending the club’s unbeaten streak to a record-setting nine consecutive matches.
Two international stars played major roles in the victory, as Kiana Palacios scored her first-ever NWSL goal while Mina Tanaka continued adding to her growing legacy in Utah.
Palacios opened the scoring in the 20th minute after forward Cloé Lacasse pressured Denver’s back line and forced a turnover deep in the attacking third. The loose ball fell perfectly into the path of Palacios, who calmly fired a left-footed finish into the back of the net to give Utah a 1-0 lead.
The finish marked Palacios’ first goal in the National Women’s Soccer League and her first goal for the Royals since joining the club ahead of the 2026 season. She also became the eighth different Utah player to score this year, highlighting the balance and depth within Jimmy Coenraets’ attack.
Palacios’ breakthrough moment helped Utah continue its dominance when scoring first this season, improving to 6-1-0 in matches where the Royals open the scoring.
After Denver equalized moments before halftime through Yazmeen Ryan, Utah once again turned to Tanaka in a decisive moment.
In the 72nd minute, Lacasse earned a penalty after drawing contact inside the box, allowing Tanaka to step up and confidently bury the game-winning penalty into the bottom-right corner of the net.
The goal continued what has become a historic season for the Japanese international. Tanaka has now been involved in the winning goal in five of Utah’s seven victories this season, recording three goals and two assists in those matches. Only Portland’s Olivia Moultrie has matched that total across the NWSL in 2026.
Tanaka’s recent form at America First Field has been especially dominant. Across her last four home matches, she has recorded three goals and two assists while helping lead Utah to four consecutive home victories, the longest home winning streak in club history.
Saturday’s goal also pushed Tanaka further up the Royals record books. With 11 career goals and four assists, Tanaka now owns 15 career goal contributions for Utah, tying Amy Rodriguez for the most in club history. Her 11 goals also place her alone in second on Utah’s all-time scoring list, trailing only Rodriguez’s 14 career goals.
Defensively, Utah continued its strong form behind veteran captain Kate Del Fava, who once again played every minute for the Royals, while goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn moved closer to another milestone with her 194th regular-season save.
With the victory, Utah improved to 7-2-2 on the season and remained second in the NWSL standings entering next weekend’s road match against the Portland Thorns before the FIFA World Cup break.
