The Utah Royals are coming off of an unforgettable home closer as Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets and his squad capped off the historic 2026 season by clinching a playoff spot for the first time in club history in front of a home crowd at America First Field. Now, with one final match remaining in the 2026 NWSL regular season, URFC will travel to Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey to take on top ranked Gotham FC this Sunday in hopes of a result that could lift the visitors into a higher playoff seed.
This edition of storylines will take a deeper look into what’s at stake in the season finale, the key roster pieces for URFC as it gears up for the post season and the visiting sides history with Gotham FC.
Royals Lean on Depth and Veteran Leadership Ahead of Sunday’s Road Match
As the Utah Royals head into its final road match of the historic 2026 season, the squad is not only in search of one final regular season victory but a goal. The Royals are currently sitting at 180 minutes without a score, something unprecedented as the Utah side has netted a club best 44 goals in 2026 to become one of league's most impressive offensive threats. While a victory against Gotham isn’t promised, key roster pieces and the famed “together” mentality built into URFC, the squad is poised to continue as it has all season and break another club record with a first win against Gotham.
Japanese star Mina Tanaka will once again be unavailable for the Royals final match after sustaining a hamstring injury at camp with the Japanese Women’s National Team in October. While the loss is felt throughout the squad, URFC has depth and a plethora of other key players that continue to step up for the squad. Veteran defender and captain Kate Del Fava has continued the strong form showcased in her first ever U.S. Women’s National Team call-up against Spain on October 13. The 28-year old has continued to be a brick wall in the back helping to earn the Utah side a clean sheet last Friday against Seattle.
Along with veteran leadership like Del Fava is Cloé Lacasse who has been a constant threat, causing issues for opposing defenses all season. The Canadian forward has enjoyed an impressive season this year, sitting just behind Tanaka in the 2026 Golden Boot race with eight goals and an impressive 10 assists. With 12 rostered players having at least one playoff appearance the visitors will lean into its depth and veterans to focus on earning one last result before shifting the mindset into the post season.
If the Royals are able to secure a victory on Sunday afternoon and results from both the Kansas City Current and Angel City matches end in favor of the Utah side, the Royals have a chance of finishing in fourth place and securing its first playoff game in front of a home crowd at America First Field. Although its playoff positioning is not solely in the hands of the squad, URFC will do as it has done all season and work together to head into its first-ever playoff appearance with confidence and momentum.
The Road to Earning a First-Ever Victory Against Gotham FC
As URFC heads to New Jersey this Sunday, the visiting squad is not only looking to close out the season on a high but earn its first-ever victory against Gotham since its Return to Royalty in 2024. In the two sides last five meetings, Utah has only netted two goals bringing its overall record to 0-4-1 (W-L-T). A result over the weekend could not only give the Royals a better playoff seed but inject confidence into the squad prior to its first ever postseason appearance.
In order to earn a result the URFC side will not only need to work as a unit to snap its scoreless streak but stifle the attack from a Gotham side that is peppered with talent. Among a few of the key pieces throughout the home side’s roster is veteran goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger who has continued to showcase her presence between the posts, earning 10 clean sheets this season. Along with the German-born ‘keeper is the attacking duo of midfielder Rose Lavelle and forward Jayden Shaw.
Both Gotham attackers have been key fixtures for both club and country, netting scores and working creatively alongside each other to earn scoring opportunities for themselves and their teammates. At just 21-years-old Shaw is the New Jersey side’s 2026 Golden Boot leader with 10 goals and five assists this season. The young forward brings technical creativity and composure to the pitch that works seamlessly with Lavelle. The veteran midfielder currently sits with four goals and three assists this season, bringing her pace and high-level dribbling abilities to each game, making life harder for opposing defenses.
As the final match of the season approaches, URFC will look to thwart the attack of Gotham as well as work creatively as an offense to move the ball through the defense in hopes of earning a historic result and possibly bettering its playoff seeding as it heads into its first-ever postseason.
The season finale against Gotham FC on Sunday, November 1 is scheduled to kickoff at 3 p.m. MT at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. With one last match ahead of the 2026 NWSL Playoffs, catch all of the URFC road match action this weekend exclusively on ESPN.
