Following an exciting 2-1 comeback win against Orlando Pride last week, Utah Royals FC returns home on Friday, September 4 to take on 2026 expansion side Boston Legacy FC for the first time at America First Field. With only 8 games remaining in the NWSL regular season, every point is crucial as Utah looks to secure its place in the playoffs.

This edition of storylines highlights major milestones hit by Royals’ players and coaches and recounts Utah’s brief NWSL history against Boston.

Shared Contributions Headline Royals’ Dominant Attack

Utah has become an offensive powerhouse in 2026, leading the NWSL in goals scored largely because of shared contributions on its front line. Leading the way is Canadian international Cloé Lacasse, who recently tied the NWSL’s all-time record for assists in a season (10) by setting up Paige Cronin’s goal against Orlando. Lacasse also netted her seventh goal of the year last Saturday, bringing her to a total of 17 goal contributions on the season — a Royals record and second in the NWSL (only behind Ashley Sanchez’ 19).

Lacasse’s goal against Orlando was assisted by Kiana Palacios, who has thrived in her first season in Utah as a non-traditional striker. Palacios can drop into midfield to create space for the wingers, but she’s also capable of drifting out wide herself. She showed that versatility Saturday, when she moved to the right sideline and assisted Lacasse with a cross. At striker, Palacios is much more than a goal scorer, and she now has three goals and four assists in 2026.

Rounding out Utah’s dominant attacking trident is Mina Tanaka, the Royals’ leading goal scorer. The Japanese international is up to eight goals on the season and has only improved her form as the year has progressed, scoring three goals in two games against Bay FC (August 14) and San Diego Wave FC (August 21). Tanaka is set to make her 50th Royals appearance against Boston, and will look to take her chances against a Legacy team that has conceded 15 goals in its last four games.

Jimmy Coenraets Reaches 50 Matches as Royals’ Head Coach

On Friday, Jimmy Coenraets will take his place on the touchline for the 50th time as the Royals’ head coach. After serving as the women’s manager of OH Leuven in Belgium,

Coenraets joined the team as an assistant coach in June of 2024, and after leadership changes, he became the interim coach less than a month later. Under his guidance, the Royals went 5-3-2, tripling their point total compared to the first half of the season, and he was ultimately named head coach in October of 2024.

The Royals have had an impressive turnaround under Coenraets, evidenced by a record-breaking 2026 NWSL season. The Club experienced its longest unbeaten streak (10 games) from March 25 to May 30, scored the most goals in the league (39 as of August 29), and won a record 12 games with eight matches still to play. Coenraets and Co. will hope to continue their historic form to earn the Club its first-ever playoff berth in November.

Boston Legacy FC Travels To Play First-Ever Game In Utah

Boston and Utah have only faced off once since the East Coast side joined the NWSL at the start of the 2026 season, with the Royals winning 2-1 in March. On that day, defender Tatumn Milazzo scored her second goal as a Royal, putting Utah in front with a left-footed shot at the back post in the 33rd minute. In the 50th minute, Lara Prašnikar - who transferred to Frauen-Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in August - converted the Royals’ first penalty of the season, scoring what would ultimately be the game-winner.

The penalty was the first of six the Royals have earned this season, a league-high total in the NWSL, while Boston leads the league with eight penalties conceded. Hoping to extend the Legacy’s current five-game winless streak, Utah will look to capitalize on those defensive errors to get a crucial win in front of its home fans on Friday.

Kickoff against Boston Legacy FC is set for 7:30 p.m. MT on Friday, August 4, from America First Field. Tickets to the match are available for purchase here.
