Storylines | Utah Royals v. Houston Dash: A Chance to Spark a Late Season Surge

All eyes shift to the Lone Star State this weekend as the Utah Royals face the Houston Dash on Saturday evening. With the recent rollercoaster of wins and losses for the Utah side, URFC’s history against the Dash poises Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets’ squad with the ability to regain momentum heading into its final stretch of matches. 

In this edition of storylines we’ll take a closer look at one Utah Royal who continues to be a key producer for URFC’s power offense and could shatter an NWSL record this weekend, the exciting new addition to the Royals and the club's history with the Houston Dash.

Royals Look to its Attack to Finish Strong  

The Utah Royals head into the weekend road match caught in a win-loss cycle, alternating results in each of its last eight matches. While Coenraets’ squad has continued to find the back of the net, scoring 18 goals in its last eight matches, the squad has only come away with four victories in the span. With seven games remaining in the NWSL regular season, URFC will look to recreate the form that earned it a 10 game unbeaten streak at the beginning of the season and finish on a high before what many hope is the club’s first-ever appearance in the post season. 

While the Utah side is looking to break another record and earn its first-ever playoff berth, one instrumental piece to the URFC attack can break an NWSL single season record on Saturday evening. Canadian forward Cloé Lacasse has enjoyed a red-hot 2026 season, netting seven goals and recently earning her 10th assist to now sit in a three way tie with Tobin Heath (Portland 2016) and Croix Bethune (Washington 2024). 

With the Kansas City Current playing Friday evening, there is a chance for the record to change before the Royals kickoff Saturday. Bethune, who also currently has 10 assists, can move into sole possession of a NWSL single-season record 11, while another Lacasse assist against Houston would once again bring the two level at the top. 

The veteran forward has been instrumental in Utah’s historic 2026 campaign, emerging as one of the driving forces behind the Royals’ newfound identity as a top attacking threat. Lacasse brings speed and an ability to cut through defenders with the ball at her feet to consistently create space for her and her teammates, while her creativity in the final third has added another dimension to the Utah attack. Whether it’s creating chances herself or finding the final pass, Lacasse has become a vital piece of Coenraets’ attack and the forward is a major reason for the Royals 2026 success. 

Along with the Canadian veteran comes a new addition to the Royals front line, forward Jameese Joseph who joined URFC last week from the Chicago Stars. Since joining the NWSL in 2024, the forward has netted eight goals (including playoffs) and four assists in her young professional career. The 24-year-old Maryland native has proven to beat defenders with both the ball at her feet and by making creative runs in the attacking third. Joseph is a highly versatile forward whose explosive speed and dynamic abilities on and off the ball will be a boost to the URFC attack. 

With the Royals current attacking threats like Lacasse and the new addition of Joseph, the Utah side has all the tools necessary to right the recent rollercoaster of results and end the season on a run before heading into the postseason.

A Chance to Reclaim Momentum Against Houston  

While URFC has found itself unable to consistently earn points since the summer break, this weekend's Lone Star State opponent poses an opportunity for the Royals to regain the momentum that catapulted Utah to the top of the NWSL standings earlier this season. 

Since the Return of Royalty in 2024, the Utah Royals have historically performed well against the Houston Dash, earning results and boasting an overall record of 3-1-1 (W-L-T) against the club. In the last meeting between the two sides on May 6, Utah earned a 2-0 victory in front of a home crowd at America First Field with Lacasse and Utah native, Courtney Brown netting goals to go along with a stellar performance by the defense and veteran goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn who earned her fourth consecutive clean sheet in the victory.

Similarly to the Royals who have been on a rollercoaster of wins and loses as of late, Houston enters the weekend on a three game losing streak. After dominating the Chicago Stars in a 6-0 victory on August 19, the Dash have fallen to Bay, Seattle and Orlando in its most recent three matchups. 

Although Houston has struggled a bout of losses, its squad features key players like rookie forward Kat Rader who has enjoyed an impressive season thus far. The first year professional sits atop Chicago’s Golden Boot leaderboard with nine goals and one assist, including her first career NWSL brace in the 6-0 victory over Chicago. The former Duke Blue Devil has entered the NWSL in stride, following a prolific collegiate career Rader has continued to showcase her versatility in the attack and lethal scoring ability when she receives the ball in the 18-yard-box. 

For the Royals to earn a result on Saturday the defense will need to work as a brick wall to stop Rader who finds success with smart movements both on and off the ball. The URFC attack will look to pressure the defense early to get onto the board first and continue its strong 2026 season and historically positive outcomes against the Houston side. 

The Utah Royals road matchup against the Houston Dash on Saturday, September 12 is scheduled to kickoff at 6:45 p.m. MT and will be streaming on ION. Following this weekend's trip, URFC returns to the Wasatch Front, welcoming former Utah Royal Ally Sentnor and Angel City FC to America First Field on Sunday, September 20.
