Game at a Glance: RSL Drops in Hard-Fought Battle

Real Salt Lake 0 vs. Los Angeles FC 1

July 3, 2021; Rio Tinto Stadium

Real Salt Lake (3-3-4, 13 points); Los Angeles FC (4-4-3, 15 points)

Man of the Match: Albert Rusnák led the way with five key passes, creating several opportunities at goal for Real Salt Lake. His one shot on goal left Tomas Romero reaching his full body across the face of goal to prevent the Slovakian from scoring.

Telling Stat: Los Angeles FC only managed to get one shot on target, Real Salt Lake withstanding their opponent’s historically impressive attacking prowess. However, LAFC was able to tuck that one shot into goal for the lone score of the match. On the other side RSL had four shots on target, including one from Rubio Rubin that nearly crossed the line, forcing an LAFC defender to put his body on the line to prevent what would have been the equalizer.

What You Missed: Despite leading in nearly every category, Real Salt Lake fell 1-0 to LAFC in Rio Tinto Stadium’s return to full capacity. RSL maintained 58 percent of the possession, while outshooting LAFC 14-9, four of which were on frame, forcing goalkeeper Tomas Romero to make three massive saves.

So What: Real Salt Lake move to a 2-2-3 record at Rio Tinto Stadium, earning nine out of a possible 21 points at home. The team goes again on Wednesday, July 7 at 8:00 p.m. MT against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Despite being played at the RioT, Real Salt Lake will not be the home team, however a limited number of fans will be allowed to attend.
