Looking to extend its unbeaten run to five straight matches, Real Salt Lake entered Saturday’s matinee with clear intent. Backed by yet another energized home crowd at America First Field (eighth consecutive sellout, by the way), the Claret-and-Cobalt delivered in the rare day game, defeating rival Sporting Kansas City, 3-1, in a commanding appearance. All three RSL scorers - Diego Luna, Sergi Solans and Zavier Gozo - were age 23 or younger, in a match that could have enjoyed an even larger margin.

RSL wasted no time setting the tone, opening the scoring in just the fourth minute and maintaining control throughout the match.

Luna Sets the Tone

All eyes were on rising MLS star Diego Luna, who made his first start of the 2026 season after returning to the lineup following. A preseason knee injury that had limited his minutes the last two appearances. The U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup hopeful made an immediate impact. In the game’s fourth minute, Luna found himself on the ball just outside the box after a setup from teammate Noel Caliskan. With composure and confidence, Luna fired a precise, left-footed shot into the bottom right corner, giving RSL an early 1-0 lead and marking the two-time MLS All-Star’s first goal of the 2026 campaign.

Luna’s presence brought energy and creativity to the midfield, setting the pace early and signaling what dynamism he can offer this squad this season. As the 22-year-old continues to build chemistry with this team, his ability to dictate play and create chances will continue to be a key asset for RSL’s attack.

Solans’ Relentless Effort Pays Off

Since arriving in Utah ahead of the 2026 season, rookie Sergi Solans has quickly established himself as a dangerous attacking presence. The Spanish forward out of UCLA has averaged nearly one goal per start, scoring three goals in his last four MLS appearances, scoring his first professional goal early on in his first-ever start at Atlanta United on March 7, a 3-1 win.

Saturday, Solans nearly opened his account on multiple occasions earlier in the match, striking the crossbar twice - once in the 21st minute and again in the 40th - while continuing to generate dangerous opportunities, including a one-on-one with the KC ‘keeper late in the half.

His breakthrough finally came in the 55th minute, after a pass from Morgan Guilavogui found Zavier Gozo in stride, who drove forward before laying the ball off to Solans. The rookie forward crossed up his opponent, powering his shot past the goalkeeper to double RSL’s lead at 2-0.

With his third goal of the 2026 season, Solans continues to prove himself as a true attacking threat and a critical player to watch as the season unfolds.

Gozo Caps It Off

After contributing to Solans’ goal, Utah native Gozo found his own spotlight moment late in the match. In the 82nd minute, Stijn Spierings played a ball into Caliskan, who quickly connected with Gozo just outside the box. Gozo took a touch - in his words, a bad one - that saw the ball pop up before unleashing a powerful volley into the back of the net, leaving the opponents with no chance to seal the 3-1 victory.

The spectacular goal - in a similar fashion from the same spot on the Sandy, Utah pitch that saw former RSL man Will Johnson unleash the 2008 MLS Goal of the Year - restored RSL’s two-goal cushion and capped off a strong attacking performance, while Caliskan’s assist marked his second of the night.

Building Momentum

With the win - RSL’s third of the year at home, its fifth consecutive home win and eighth straight sellout at America First Field dating back to last fall - Real Salt Lake extends its active 2026 unbeaten streak to five matches, continuing to build momentum early in this campaign. Contributions across the lineup - highlighted by Luna’s dynamic return, Solans’ consistent danger, and Gozo’s relentless impact - underscore the Claret-and-Cobalt’s  growing cohesion and attacking depth.
