The Claret-and-Cobalt set out to defend home turf once again as Western Conference media darlings San Diego FC arrived on the Wasatch Saturday night. Playing just its second match in a month-long span due to a pair of bye weeks, RSL looked to defend its America First Field fortress with nearly the same starting lineup from its 3-1 victory over Sporting KC back on April 4. With an early goal from fan-favorite Diego Luna, two first-half goals from Spanish forward Sergi Solans and a debut goal from French forward Morgan Guilavogui, RSL once again delivered three points to the 20,852 fans in attendance, further proving its ability to protect its house and remain perfect on 2026 with a 4-0-0 home mark.
RSL Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni made a singular change to the starting lineup from the previous match against Sporting KC, with defender Philip Quinton a late scratch after tweaking his calf during warmups, replaced by DeAndre Yedlin at right centerback. The consistency in formation again paid dividends as RSL earned another victory, a testament to the strength and chemistry that results in mixing youth with MLS experience.
With Saturday's win, RSL has captured all 12 available points at home during the 2026 season - starting a campaign with four consecutive wins for only the second time in Club history (2016) - now looking to continue its perfect streak Wednesday against Miami.
Early Lead from Moon Man
In just the game’s fifth minute, RSL star Diego Luna struck early for a second consecutive match with savvy and guile, intercepting a lazy pass and slotting a sneaky right-footed shot to out RSL up 1-0. The strike was the result of an interception from an attempted pass from San Diego GK Duran Ferree, following a goal kick from DF Manu Duah. Upon receiving the ball from Duah, Ferree tried to connect the ball back, but Luna capitalized with speed, beating the defense to the ball - earning the first point of the match and giving the advantage to the Claret-and-Cobalt. Marking his second goal of the season, the goal was also his second of the first five minutes of a start, the prior coming two weeks earlier against Sporting KC, where Luna was first on the scoreboard in the 4th minute. RSL now boasts 50 wins and 18 draws against just 10 losses when scoring first during the Pablo Mastroeni era, dating back to August, 2021.
Two Goals for #22: Sergi Solans
RSL didn’t waste another minute doubling its lead. In just over 60 seconds, Solans broke through San Diego’s defense with a beautiful header that brought RSL to a 2-0 advantage. The Spanish forward received an impressive long ball from Luna at the top right of the box, soaring over San Diego’s defense and to an awaiting Solans at the far post. Making contact with the ball in the air, Solans slotted it through a narrow space between the post and the GK, landing at the back of the net in the bottom left corner.
In the 37th minute, Solans came back for more. After a cross to the center of the box from Zavier Gozo, the ball found Solans in the air yet again, who finished strong with another header from the center of the box, sending the ball soaring to the back of the net.
With his first brace of his professional career, Solans logged his fifth RSL goal in as many games, including three headers in two matches against San Diego. In his rookie MLS campaign with the Claret-and-Cobalt, Solans now holds five goals and one assist after appearing in all seven of RSL’s games thus far in the 2026 season.
Morgan Guilavogui Marks His Debut Goal
Designated Player and French-born playmaker Morgan Guilavogui made history with his debut MLS and RSL goal on Saturday in the 45th minute. After Solans dribbled the ball to the top of the 18, he sent a short pass to Guilavogui who had surged forward on the pitch, wrapping from behind Solans to his left, creating space for a shot at the top of the six yard box. With a strategic right-footed strike to the bottom right corner, the forward brought the score 4-1, marking the first time the Claret-and-Cobalt have scored four goals in the first half since its match against Austin FC in June, 2024.
Four goals in the first half resulted in RSL’s sixth straight overall home win and its fourth of this year, bringing the Club’s record to 5-1-1 for the 2026 campaign, with 16 total points, tied for top 4 in the West with Seattle, which RSL defeated back in Feb. 28.
Looking Ahead
As the Claret-and-Cobalt continue to build momentum from these home-field victories, the focus now turns to its highly-anticipated face-off with Inter Miami CF this Wednesday, April 22 at 7:30 PM MT. RSL will look to secure five straight home wins to start a season for the first time ever, carrying that winning energy into the matchup while staying disciplined against a high-profile opponent.
