Player Spotlight | Silver Linings from Saturday’s Difficult 0-3 Home Loss

Welcome Back Emeka Eneli

In the 64th minute, former RSL captain and 2025 USMNT midfielder Emeka Eneli made his return to the pitch for the first time in 11 months. Eneli has been sidelined since last year’s postseason with a complicated and progressively obstinate knee injury, making his last appearance in the West Wild Card match back on October 22, 2025, at Portland.

Drafted by Real Salt Lake in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft out of Cornell, Eneli made his presence felt throughout the historic 2024 RSL campaign, recognized for his positional versatility and becoming the youngest captain in RSL’s 22-year history in a road match at Kansas City. The former Ivy Leaguer capped off that year by winning the Club’s 2024 Most Valuable Player award as voted by his peers, receiving his first callup to the U.S. Men’s National Team. Eneli earned two caps for the Stars-and-Stripes in January, 2025, amongst his 68 appearances for RSL, even scoring once back in a 2024 Audi MLS Cup Playoff match at Minnesota.

Although his 2025 season was marred by a quadriceps injury, Eneli played a pivotal part in the 2025 MLS season as he was instrumental in the midfield, buoyed by his taste of national team success. His consistency, experience and leadership made him first choice for Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni’s side, being named Captain at the season’s outset, prior to Rafa Cabral assuming the armband after Eneli’s extended injury absence.

Defensive Contributors

Despite the weekend’s 0-3 loss to Vancouver, current captain Rafael Cabral, made several important saves in the first half to keep RSL in the match. The first came from a long-distance shot from the Whitecaps’ Emmanuel Sabbi, one bound for the top right corner. The Brazilian goalkeeper made a quick save to his left side to keep the game at 1-0. A brilliant second save for the veteran goalkeeper came after blocking an inswinging cross from Thomas Müller, bending toward the bottom right corner. Cabral made another incredible save in the first half as Vancouver’s Yadaly Diaby launched another shot destined for the top right of the goal. Once again, the RSL captain came up big with two strong hands to deny the French striker from scoring.

In the 21st minute, Diaby’s right-footed shot from near-range saw former USMNT defender DeAndre Yedlin put his body on the line to make the crucial block. The experienced right back made numerous additional defensive contributions with blocks, interceptions, and tackles throughout the match.

Real Salt Lake now head to Lumen Field to face off against Seattle Sounders in a clash between two clubs looking to snap extended post-World Cup winless streaks. The match is scheduled for this Wednesday, September 23, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. MT, streaming on Apple TV.
