Real Monarchs SLC Seeking First Road Win of 2019 Season

HERRIMAN, Utah (Monday, May 27, 2019) â€“ Real Monarchs SLC (3-5-3, 12 points, 15 West) moves out on the road in the search for its first win away from home when it faces Portland Timbers 2 Wednesday, May 29 at Providence Park. Kickoff in Oregon is set for 8:00p MT.

In its second match in the Four-Corners Cup, Real Monarchs fell in a 4-2 result against Phoenix Rising FC. The Monarchs opened up the scoring early in the 10th minute as RSL DF Marcelo Silva put away the headed effort to give the Utah side an early lead. FW Douglas Martinez doubled that lead just a few moments later, converting a lobbed pass from MF Ricardo Avila. As Rising FC fell into its rhythm however, the Arizona side would convert four unanswered goals to take away the three points from Zions Bank Stadium.

The Monarchs now hit the road to play Portland Timbers 2 for the first time in 2019. In 2018, the Monarchs and Timbers 2 met twice early in the season in matches that saw the two split the six points with a win each. The Monarchs opened its 2018 incredible 13 game undefeated home streak with a 4-2 win over Portland Timbers 2, then fell at Providence Park two months later to a late second-half goal. As Real Monarchs search for its first road win this season as the Utah side rises to the challenge of playing at the newly renovated Providence Park.

For 2019, the Monarchs return a familiar core of players from the 2018 season as DFs James MobergKalen RydenKonrad PlewaAndrew Brody & Stanley Okumu lead the backline of one of the league’s most elite sides. MFs Maikel ChangJack BlakeJosh Heard and Masta Kacher all return carrying with them a slew of experience into their second season in the midfield with the Monarchs.

New faces in the squad include players with ample USL Championship experience like DF Noah Powder, FW Douglas Martinez. Panamanian international MF Ricardo Avila highlights the season’s newcomers as the World Cup veteran is joined by FW Lionel Etoundi, MF Damian German and Honduran youth international FW Luis Palma. RSL Academy productsJordan Pena and Steve Jasso also exemplify the growth pipeline between the Academy and the professional ranks for the 2019 season. GKs Todd Morton and Evan Finney round out the list of new faces set to contribute to the Monarchs during the 2019 season.
