Real Salt Lake’s chaotic 2026 campaign has all come down to this. After 33 matchdays of mayhem including a strong start, a World Cup break, a historic winless streak and a late-season surge, the Claret-and-Cobalt now return to America First Field for a season-defining matchup on Saturday, November 7. Hosting six-time MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy on Decision Day, 90 minutes stands between RSL and a West-best sixth consecutive playoff appearance. Only a win will do.

This edition of storylines identifies a familiar face returning to the Wasatch Front, analyzes RSL’s storied history against the Galaxy, and looks at the scenarios that will determine the Claret-and-Cobalt’s playoff future.

Pablo Ruiz Returns to Utah After Joining Galaxy’s Star-Studded Cast

Pablo Ruiz will return to America First Field on Saturday, this time dawning new colors. For nine seasons, the Argentine midfielder was an invaluable member of RSL’s squad, amassing 136 MLS appearances, starting 105 MLS matches and scoring nine goals during his extended tenure with the Club. Ruiz’s time in Utah came to an end in early September, when he was traded to the LA Galaxy, and the dual national Chilean/Argentine has made the most of his opportunity in the South Bay. RSL’s former No. 7 has started eight MLS matchups and has appeared in all 10 games since joining the Galaxy, scoring once and recording a 5-2-3 (W-L-T) mark in those games. This weekend, with the Galaxy fighting for a playoff spot of their own, Ruiz will be among the many talents looking to halt RSL’s postseason aspirations.

Leading the long list of the Galaxy’s playmakers is Marco Reus, the German international known globally for his many achievements with, and loyalty to, Borussia Dortmund. His talents have translated to the United States, where he has already won an MLS Cup (2024), in addition to notching 20 MLS goal contributions (8 goals, 12 assists) in 2026. The Galaxy are further reinforced by long-time Barcelona staple Sergi Roberto, Mexican World Cup hero Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and Lucas Sanabria, brother of RSL’s Uruguayan difference-maker Juan Manuel. With LA’s significant attacking firepower, the Claret-and-Cobalt will require a big performance from its defense on Saturday to secure the vital three points.

Matchup History: RSL vs LA

Since Real Salt Lake joined MLS in 2005, the Galaxy have been a consistent and fierce opponent, with the two sides meeting a staggering 54 times in MLS play over the past 22 years. Los Angeles maintains a slight edge in the all-time series, with RSL holding an 18-23-13 (W-L-T) record despite outscoring the Galaxy 87 to 84 in those matchups. On Utah soil, RSL holds an 11-7-8 (W-L-T) advantage, outscoring the Galaxy 48-35.

Recently, the Galaxy seem to have taken the upper-hand in the series. The Claret-and-Cobalt have been victorious in only one of its last five and three of its last 10 against LA, including a 2-1 defeat in their latest encounter this April, in which Reus netted a late game-winning penalty. That advantage, however, might be negated by America First Field, a fortress in which RSL is 12-4-4 this season and unbeaten in its last three. Furthermore, RSL prevailed the last time the Galaxy played in Utah back in April 2025, when a Diego Luna brace fueled the home side to a 2-0 victory.

Ultimately, Saturday’s match may be about who can capitalize on a positive run of form. Mastroeni and Co. have scored in seven straight MLS matches, dating back to the dominant 3-0 win over New England Revolution that turned the tide of their season. On the other side, the Galaxy enter Decision Day on a four-game unbeaten streak (two wins, two draws), despite having conceded 11 goals in its last five games. With both teams fighting for postseason lives, anything is on the table.

Playoff Scenarios: What Does RSL Need?

For RSL, the task is simple: win. With three points on Saturday, combined with one of Portland, Colorado, or Seattle dropping points, the Claret-and-Cobalt will advance to the postseason for a West-best sixth straight year, the eighth time in the last nine seasons, and 16th time in the last 19 campaigns.

Anything less than the full three points gets dicey for the Utah side. A tie against LA could be enough, but only if two of Portland, Colorado and Seattle all lose (RSL holds goal differential tiebreaker), and if Minnesota fails to win against San Jose. With favorable results, RSL could finish as high as seventh place in the West.

Everything is on the line this Saturday, November 7, as RSL fights for its postseason future on Decision Day. Kickoff against the LA Galaxy is set for 5:00 p.m. MT from America First Field, with tickets available for purchase here.
