URFC Hosts Chicago Red Stars Friday at Rio Tinto Stadium

SANDY, Utah (Thursday, May 2, 2019) â€“ Utah Royals FC returns home to host the Chicago Red Stars on Friday at 7:30p MT as the team looks to remain the lone team in the National Women’s Soccer League that has yet to draw or lose.

On Monday, Utah Royals FC DF Katie Bowen was summoned to her third Women’s World Cup team as she was called to represent New Zealand in the upcoming 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Bowen is one of just eight players who have played every minute of the team’s 2019 NWSL season thus far. The NWSL will witness a World Cup year in 2019, with URFC expecting seven players – including Bowen – to make appearances with their respective international teams for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in France. The World Cup dates are set for June 7 to July 7 with international team members scheduled to return prior to the end of the NWSL regular season.

On Thursday the URFC trio of FW Christen Press and DFs Becky Sauerbrunn and Kelley O’Hara were named to the United States Women’s National Team roster for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. All three players are expected to return prior to the end of the NWSL regular season. This year’s tournament will be Press’ second World Cup while Sauerbrunn and O’Hara will compete in their third World Cups. The USA drew into Group F of the tournament, with its opening game against Thailand taking place in Reims on June 11, followed by Chile in Paris on June 16 and then Sweden in Le Havre on June 20.

Last Saturday, Utah Royals FC topped the Orlando Pride 1-0 courtesy of a 19th minute goal from FW Christen Press and strong performance from GK Nicole Barnhart and the URFC back line. The win marked the first time the club has beat Orlando and helped usher Utah to the second spot in the NWSL standings after just two matches played.

URFC holds a 1-2-0 (3 points) all-time record against Friday’s visitors and welcomes the Red Stars back to Rio Tinto Stadium in a rematch of Royals FC’s final match of its inaugural season. In the last outing against the Red Stars, URFC saw goals from FWs Amy Rodriguez and Katie Stengel solidify a 2-1 victory in Utah.

URFC returns core players for 2019 including DF’s Becky SauerbrunnRachel CorsieKelley O’HaraBecca MorosSamantha Johnson, and Katie Bowen. On the attacking side, FW’s Christen PressAmy Rodriguez, and Katie Stengel were all retained for the 2019 season. MF Veronica “Vero” Boquete will also be essential to the Utah Royals FC roster withstanding departures for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
