HERRIMAN, Utah (Wednesday, September 2, 2026) – Utah Royals FC (12-3-7, 39 pts) return home to host Boston Legacy FC (5-5-12, 20 pts) on Friday, September 4th at America First Field with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. MT. The Royals are fresh off of a 2-1 win over Orlando Pride, returning from the road trip having climbed the NWSL table to 3rd overall. Now, Utah will face off against 2026 expansion team Boston Legacy in an attempt to secure another win in front of a home crowd.
The Royals’ 2-1 victory over Orlando was a momentous one, not only securing points, but also marking the first-ever sweep over the Pride. Despite Orlando breaking through in the 44th minute and gaining a 1-0 lead, the Royals were not deterred with Canadian forward Cloé Lacasse sending a one-touch shot into the back of the net, equalizing the score just five minutes into the second half. In the 70th minute, Lacasse sent the ball to Royals’ captain Paige Cronin, who rocketed a left-footed shot into the back of the net, giving Utah a 2-1 lead. Cronin’s goal gave Lacasse her 10th assist this season, tying her for the all-time NWSL single-season record held by Tobin Heath (2016) and Croix Bethune (2024) and marking the eighth different player Lacasse has set up a goal for this season—the most teammates a player has set up a goal for in a single regular season in NWSL history. The win also marked the first time during the 2026 season the Royals have won after trailing at the half, the victory doubly rewarding alongside the milestones achieved.
Now, the Royals return to America First Field to host Boston Legacy FC in its second-ever meetup against the expansion team. URFC's first and only meeting against the Legacy ended in a 2-1 win over the club at Gillette Stadium on March 28th, marking Utah's first victory of the 2026 season. The win was due in part to defender Tatumn Milazzo who headed the ball into the net, giving Utah a 1-0 lead, and Slovenian-international Lara Prašnikar, who fired a powerful shot, doubling the Royals’ lead to 2-0 before Boston scored late in the first half, marking their first goal in club history.
Boston enters Friday’s matchup with a 5-5-12 league record with 20 pts, sitting at 15th in the overall NWSL standings. The Legacy are coming off of a recent 2-5 loss to Angel City FC on Monday, previously falling to North Carolina Courage on August 22nd. The club has not found a win in their last five matches, with a 4-W-1-D record for the last few games.
The club is led by Head Coach Filipa Patão, who was named as the first-ever head coach for the Legacy ahead of the 2026 campaign. Boston’s Aissata Traoré, who scored the Legacy's inaugural goal against the Royals in March, will be the player to watch for. Five of Traoré’s seven goals this season have been scored in the 76th minute or later, including an 88th minute goal against Angel City FC on Monday.
The Royals have won four out of its five all-time matches against teams in their first NWSL season, demonstrating good form against expansion teams. If the Royals’ backline can prevail against a possible late Traoré goal, the Club stands to secure three more points in the push for playoff contention and obtain a win in front of a home crowd during Matchweek 20 of the NWSL 2026 season.
