Jefferson Savarino Continues Fine Form in Loss

Game At A Glance Thumb

Real Salt Lake 1 vs. 2 FC Dallas

April 15, 2023; Toyota Stadium; Frisco, Texas  Real Salt Lake (2-5-0, 6 points); FC Dallas (4-2-2, 14 points)

Man of the Match: After tallying a goal and an assist in last week’s win against Charlotte FC, **Jefferson Savarino** continued his goal-scoring form in the 2-1 loss to FC Dallas. Savarino led the team with four shots, three of which were on target, and scored RSL’s only goal of the game in the 68th minute with a diving header on the end of a Justin Meram cross. Savarino is now tied with Justen Glad for the Club’s leading goal scorer this season with two.

Telling Stats: Jesus Ferreira’s goal in the fifth minute marked the seventh consecutive match this season in which RSL has conceded first, the longest such streak in the Club’s history. It is also the team’s longest stretch of matches without a clean sheet to begin a season. The loss snaps RSL’s five-match unbeaten streak at Toyota Stadium, with the last loss in Frisco coming in 2017.

What You Missed: FC Dallas broke through first, as their leading goal scorer Jesus Ferreiera tapped in a pass from Geovane Jesus just five minutes into the match. The first half came to an entertaining close after a potential handball by a Dallas player inside the box was waved off, preventing RSL from tying the game before heading into the changing rooms. The Claret-and-Cobalt continued to knock on the door, and finally in the 68th minute the relentless attack paid off as substitute Justin Meram curled in a cross finding the head of a diving Jefferson Savarino to even the score 1-1. Despite the jolt in offense from RSL, FC Dallas found the game-winning goal in the 88th minute when Bernard Kamungo connected on the end of a Marco Farnfan pass to seal the 2-1 victory for the hosts.

What’s Next?: RSL return home to America First Field to close the month of April, taking on San Jose Earthquakes on the 22nd and Seattle Sounders on the 29th. Both matches will kick off at 7:30 PM M.T. and will be streamed on Apple TV MLS Season Pass.
