Eyeing its first four-game win streak since the summer of 2013, Real Salt Lake arrived at Snapdragon Stadium hungry for a full serving of three points. The Claret-and-Cobalt’s eagerness was apparent from the opening whistle and throughout the entirety of the match, but ultimately RSL was forced to settle for an exciting, 2-2 draw.
The result extends the Claret-and-Cobalt unbeaten run to four matches, its lone loss of the 2026 campaign coming on the Feb. 21 opening day at Vancouver, a narrow 1-0 defeat that saw a red card awarded only retroactively for the reigning Western Conference Champions. Late heroics Sunday again secured RSL its point at San Diego as Real Salt Lake now moves to 40 wins, 10 losses, and 19 draws after scoring first during Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni’s five-year era.
Soaring Solans
2025 MLS SuperDraft pick Sergi Solans has made his presence felt in his short time with the Claret-and-Cobalt. Appearing in all five Real Salt Lake matches thus far, starting three - rookie Solans is tied atop of the Club Golden Boot race, tied with RSL Academy product and homegrown Aiden Hezarkhani, each with a pair to their names.
Active early in the match, and entering the final third, Solans played a simple ball out wide to JuanMa Sanabria before charging into the box. Playing a ball high across the area, Solans met Sanabria’s service thanks to an acrobatic effort elevating and heading home the finish for his second of the year. The goal marks the second time this season Solans has been the first goalscorer of a match (March 7 @ ATL), with both goals coming in the first half-hour.
Solans’ ability to get into space and create chances for not only himself, but also for others has led to a memorable start to his rookie campaign. A focal point in a diverse attacking group, there is no doubt that RSL fans will be seeing more of Solans’ iconic knee slides in the near future.
Quarterback Pulls the Strings
Real Salt Lake Designated Player Morgan Guiliavogui sits as the lone midfielder tied at the top of the Claret-and-Cobalt assist leaderboard, tied with three defenders who’ve each notched two assists thus far. Active in the RSL midfield, Guilavogui acts as the squad’s quarterback, often operating in the middle of the park and constantly passing his teammates into open areas with perfectly-weighted balls.
Creating multiple chances for himself to open his RSL scoring account, but narrowly missing earlier in the match, Guiliavogui played a crucial role in tying up the scoreline and securing a point for the visitors on Sunday.
Receiving the ball on the right flank from MF Noel Caliskan, Guiliavogui surveyed his options before firing a curling ball across the box that somehow missed multiple defenders and eluded both Stijn Spierings and Justen Glad, just off of Duran Ferree’s line and eventually finding FW Victor Olatunji on the back post, the Nigerian tapping in the equalizer for his first goal of the 2026 season. As Olatunji continues to inch his way further into the XI, this duo will provide an attacking spark for the remainder of the campaign.
