Real Salt Lake Suffers Home Draw Again vs Minnesota with Late Concession

SANDY, Utah (Sat., Aug. 15, 2026) – Real Salt Lake (8-6-4, 28 points, 6th West / 11th MLS Shield) extended its MLS winless streak to five games Saturday night, playing Minnesota United FC (6-6-7, 25 points, 9th West / 17th MLS Shield) to a 1-1 draw, dropping RSL to 10-1-2 (W-L-T) this year at America First Field. 

Rookie Sergi Solans scored RSL’s lone goal of the evening in the 82nd minute, making it three consecutive games in which the Spanish striker has scored (four goals in five August matches). The goal also extended Solans’ lead atop the Club’s Golden Boot race, with eight MLS goals in 2026. Minnesota’s equalizer in the closing minutes made it the eighth time in the last 10 encounters that the two sides have drawn, the most of any fixture involving two MLS teams since the start of the 2023 season.

RSL Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni made four personnel changes and one positional shift to the Starting XI for Saturday’s return to MLS action. Lukas Engel and Juan Jose Arias replaced Sam Junqua and DeAndre Yedlin on defense, while Philip Quinton moved to right center back following the 3-0 shutout performance Tuesday against FC Juarez. Mastroeni also rotated a pivot, with Noel Caliskan entering for Pablo Ruiz, and started in-form rookie Solans in place of Designated Player Morgan Guilavogui, in concussion protocol following his 45 minutes against Juarez on Tuesday.

RSL looked the more dangerous side at the start of the first half, forcing Minnesota goalkeeper Drake Callender to make a number of saves in the opening moments. Mastroeni was forced to use an early substitution in the 12th minute, sending in wingback Dominik Marczuk when Utah native Zach Booth was forced out with a right hamstring injury.

Minnesota grew into the match, forcing a total of five corners in the half that tested the home side’s defense. The visitors came close to finding their opener in the 34th minute, when Anthony Markanich chipped captain Rafael Cabral off a misplaced back pass from Quinton. Miraculously, Engel appeared at the last second for RSL, clearing the ball off the line with a right-footed kick. Neither team was able to separate themselves in the opening 45 minutes, and the sides entered the break tied at 0-0.

The Claret-and-Cobalt were re-energized coming out of the locker room, putting heavy pressure on Minnesota’s defense at the start of the second half. Callender was forced to make back-to-back heroic saves to keep the game tied 0-0, parrying away a one-on-one with rookie Lineker Rodriguez in the 57th and blocking a shot by Spierings in the six-yard box in the 59th. A few minutes later, JuanMa Sanabria found himself barreling towards goal down the left flank after a beautiful chest touch into space. Sanabria squared the ball into a wide-open Solans, who was unable to convert on an empty net.

The opener came in the 82nd minute, when young star Diego Luna headed the ball into Solans on the right side of the penalty box. After taking a touch to settle, the red-hot Spanish star blasted a right-footed shot to the near post, beating the ‘keeper before rattling the top of the net for a 1-0 lead. 

Solans’ apparent winner didn't maintain the lead for long, as the Loons’ Joaquin Pereyra capitalized on one of Minnesota’s sole opportunities of the second half in the 89th minute. After Marcus Caldeira won a contested header, all that was left to do for the open Pereyra was to beat Cabral, whom he chipped calmly to tie the match at 1-1. With little time left for either side to steal a win, the squads settled for a draw, extending RSL’s winless streak to five in MLS play (since May 16) and Minnesota’s to eight in the regular season (since May 2). 

RSL now returns to America First Field to host FC Dallas this Wednesday, August 19, for its fifth and final home game in a stretch of 15 days. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. MT with tickets available for purchase here.
