Real Salt Lake secured its third consecutive victory Saturday night at America First Field, defeating Austin FC 2-1 in dramatic fashion. At the center of the late celebration was Dutch newcomer Stijn Spierings, whose memorable MLS debut provided the decisive moment for the Claret-and-Cobalt.
After entering the match in the 81st minute, Spierings needed just a handful of touches to leave his mark, dramatically delivering a historic game-winning goal in front of a standing-room only home crowd of 20,751.
Stijn Spierings: Instant Impact in Historic Debut
Making his first appearance for Real Salt Lake and in Major League Soccer, Spierings showcased composure and quality when it mattered most.
In the 88th minute, veteran RSL leader Justen Glad played a pass forward through the middle of the pitch, finding Spierings outside the 18-yard box. The Dutch midfielder exhibited spatial awareness as he took a quick touch and never looked up before unleashing a powerful strike into the bottom-left corner, beating the Austin goalkeeper and sending the home crowd into celebration.
The goal marked Spierings’ first for Real Salt Lake and his first in MLS, sealing a dramatic late victory for RSL.
The moment also carried historic significance. Spierings became the sixth player in team history to score in his MLS debut for Real Salt Lake, and did so in the quickest span ever for a debutant in the Club’s 22-year history. Entering in the 81st minute, the midfielder scored after just seven minutes on the field and just a few touches, immediately making his presence felt.
RSL’s Attack Creates Momentum
Throughout the match, Real Salt Lake consistently pressured the Austin defense while searching for the breakthrough.
Early chances came from the dynamic attacking group, with Zavier Gozo nearly opening the scoring in the 14th minute before his effort was blocked by an Austin defender. The breakthrough moment for RSL arrived in the 25th minute, when Noel Caliskan delivered a dangerous cross into the box, forcing Austin defender Oleksandr Svatok into a difficult clearance that deflected into his own net to level the match at 1-1.
Moments later, rookie Sergi Solans tested the Austin goalkeeper with another powerful shot from outside the box in the 26th minute, forcing a strong save to keep the match level.
RSL continued creating opportunities throughout the first half, including another close chance from Gozo in the 36th minute that was pushed away for a corner.
Defensive Stability Keeps RSL Alive
While the attack generated momentum, captain Rafa Cabral provided crucial stability in goal.
In the 42nd minute, Cabral delivered two consecutive saves to deny Austin and keep the match tied at 1-1 heading toward halftime. His composure between the posts helped maintain RSL’s momentum as the team pushed for a late breakthrough.
In the second half, RSL continued applying pressure, with Morgan Guilavogui nearly finding the net on a header in the 46th minute after a dangerous cross from Gozo, only for the Austin goalkeeper to deflect the attempt away.
Later chances from Guilavogui and Solans kept the Austin defense under constant pressure as the match entered its final stages.
Looking Ahead
Spierings’ dramatic winner capped a resilient performance from Real Salt Lake, which battled back to capture the full three points - something that happened just once in its 13 wins a season ago - after conceding early and maintaining pressure throughout the match.
The victory extends RSL’s win streak to three consecutive matches, its longest since last July, building momentum early in the 2026 campaign.
With contributions across the lineup, from Cabral’s crucial saves to attacking chances created by Gozo, Solans, and Guilavogui, the night ultimately belonged to Spierings, whose dream debut provided a memorable moment for the Claret-and-Cobalt faithful.
Real Salt Lake now turns its attention to the road next Sunday, traveling to face San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT. The match will stream live on Apple TV via MLS Season Pass, as the Claret-and-Cobalt look to continue building early-season momentum and secure a fourth consecutive victory - something the Club has not accomplished since Sept./Oct. of the 2012 season.
