SANDY, Utah (Sat., Nov. 7, 2026) – In front of 20,738 fans at America First Field, Real Salt Lake (13-14-6, 45 points, 9th West / 18th MLS Shield) earned a crucial 2-1 victory over Western Conference rival LA Galaxy (11-12-11, 44 points, 11th West / 18th MLS Shield) on Saturday, earning three points in a dramatic “Decision Day” battle to propel the Claret-and-Cobalt into the final Western Conference playoff spot. With results around MLS, RSL now travels to face eighth-seeded Seattle Sounders FC in the West Wild Card matchup on Thursday, November 19 at 8:00 p.m. MT.

Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs Wild Card Matchup: November 19 @ SEA

RSL scored both its goals in the first 13 minutes, with rookie Spanish striker Sergi Solans providing the opener just 10 minutes in. The goal was Solans’ 15th in MLS in 2026 and 19th across all competitions, capping off a sensational debut season as RSL’s Golden Boot winner, finishing just two goals shy of both the all-time single-season MLS rookie record (17 goals, Cyle Larin, Orlando 2015) and RSL’s all-time single-season record (17 goals, Alvaro Saborio, 2012; and Cristian Arango, 2024).

The game-winning goal was put away by Eden, Utah native Zach Booth, whose recent return from injury tonight saw the loanee make his first start since August 15. The strike was Booth’s second MLS goal (third in all competitions) this season, and his first since the August 8 Leagues Cup win against Atlante FC.

Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni made three personnel changes and two positional changes to the starting XI from the 2-1 loss at San Jose last weekend. Trinidad international Kobi Henry returned to the back line, pushing Philip Quinton back to the middle centerback position for the Decision Day bout. Designated Player Morgan Guilavogui returned from suspension to start at the left 10, while Juan Manuel Sanabria moved to his expected left wingback slot. Across from Sanabria, Zach Booth started at right wingback, replacing the ill Dominik Marczuk.

Understanding the stakes, the hosts immediately started the game on the front foot, pressing high and creating a number of early chances. Just five minutes in, Canadian World Cup standout Luc de Fougerolles fired a warning shot, forcing a save from Galaxy keeper JT Marcinkowski after making a few dribbles in the box. A mere five minutes later, the Claret-and-Cobalt claimed the crucial opening goal. Holding the ball at the halfway line, midfield staple Noel Caliskan played a pinpoint, curling through-ball into the path of a surging Solans. Sprinting past the final defender, RSL’s leading goalscorer took a big touch around Marcinkowski before calmly finishing on an open net for the 1-0 lead.

Just as the fans at America First Field were settling into their seats, RSL grabbed another, doubling its lead in the 13th minute. In the aftermath of a corner, Guilavogui gained possession of the ball outside of the box, playing into de Fougerolles. The Canadian was dispossessed by Pablo Ruiz, but after a failed clearance from the former RSL man, Zach Booth picked up the ball with daylight in front of him. The Utah native dispatched the opportunity with ease, converting with an outside-the-boot strike that found the bottom-right corner.

RSL kept its foot on the gas, and in the 21st minute, the Utah side nearly made it three as the front line combined to create another golden opportunity. Georgian international Saba Lobjanidze ran down the left flank, playing a ball that met the run of Guilavogui, who pulled the last defender with him. With a quick pass, the Guinean international found Solans all alone, giving fans déjà vu as he took a touch past Marcinkowski. This time however, the red-hot rookie was denied by Galaxy DF John Nelson, who made a crucial interference to clear the ball off the line. Guilavogui got a chance of his own 10 minutes later, taking yet another touch around Marcinkowski before being denied by the right post.

The visitors scored against the run of play in the 40th minute, tilting momentum in their favor just before the halftime break. From the right flank, Mexican international Hirving Lozano shot wide to the far post, deflected in by a sliding de Fougerolles. Despite LA’s late goal, RSL regained momentum with chances on target from Guilavogui and Stijn Spierings, maintaining a narrow advantage as the match entered halftime.

The final half of the game got underway in chaotic fashion, with both sides missing quality chances in quick succession. In the 68th minute, Solans put his right-footed effort just over the bar, while on the other end, Reus missed an open net after João Klauss made a critical pass past RSL captain Rafael Cabral.

Despite the stakes, the second half appeared more controlled than the first, with chances fewer and further between than in the first 45 minutes. As the game entered its final stages, fans could sense that postseason qualification was in its grasp. America First Field rose to its feet as the Club secured its sixth consecutive playoff berth, its eighth in the last nine seasons, and the 16th in the last 19 MLS campaigns. RSL also qualifies for the 2027 Leagues Cup as well.

With the Decision Day results, RSL ended the season in ninth place in the Western Conference standings, posting a 5-2-1 (W-L-T) mark down the stretch on the heels of a 13-game MLS winless streak from July to September, setting up the Audi MLS Cup Playoff West Wild Card match against eighth-seeded Seattle Sounders FC. The winner-take-all game will be played on Thursday, November 19, at Lumen Field in Seattle, with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m. MT on AppleTV.
