Stories to Watch:

Keeping it Clean

Real Salt Lake earned its fifth clean sheet of the season last Saturday against Austin FC and their fourth under the lights of Rio Tinto Stadium. Of the team’s five shutouts one was against Wednesday’s opponent, Houston Dynamo FC, on July 31 when the team played to a 0-0 draw at BBVA Stadium. Real Salt Lake ranks 10th in MLS with five shutouts this year after posting just six clean sheets in 22 games last season.

A Head Above

Bobby Wood’s goal against Austin FC was the team’s sixth goal scored via a header this season which is tied for the fifth in the league. The six headed goals are also more than the team has scored in a single season since 2018 when RSL headed in nine goals. Four of the headed goals have been scored by Damir Kreilach, with the other two coming from Wood and Erik Holt.

Connections: RSL Assistant Coach Pablo Mastroeni previously served in the same position under Dynamo FC Head Coach Tab Ramos before joining Freddy Juarez and his staff at Real Salt Lake. Similarly, one of Houston’s Assistant Coaches Martin Vasquez, led the Real Monarchs at the beginning of the 2019 USL Championship season and was a longtime fixture in the coaching ranks with the RSL Academy.

Former RSL Homegrown Player Corey Baird was recently traded from Los Angeles FC to Houston. Baird was previously traded from RSL this past offseason. During his time in Utah the forward appeared in 83 matches, scored 15 goals and was named the 2018 MLS Rookie of the Year.

RSL forward Rubio Rubin and defenders Justen Glad and Aaron Herrera each played in the FIFA U-20 World Cup under Ramos while he served as U.S. U-20 National Team Head Coach.
