Stories to Watch:

Third Times the Charm

Real Salt Lake will look to earn a clean sweep against Whitecaps FC, winning all three of their matches against the Canadian opponent. RSL first defeated Whitecaps FC 3-1 on June 18 with goals from Erik Holt and a brace from Damir Kreilach. Just a few weeks later, RSL toppled Vancouver 4-0 with another brace from Kreilach and goals from Albert Rusnak and Anderson Julio. Kreilach, who has scored four goals against Vancouver this season alone, will be unavailable from Sunday’s game due to yellow card accumulation.

The Path to History

In his fourth season as a professional, defender Aaron Herrera is shattering his offensive records, having already recorded one goal and contributing seven assists in 18 games played in 2021. His seven assists are tied for the fourth-most in the league and are the most by a defender. The last defenders to record as many assists were Anton Tinnerholm and Kai Wagner in 2019 who both provided eight assists in 30 appearances. The most assists contributed by a defender in a single season is 11, achieved by three defenders in three different seasons. Herrera will need five assists in the 14 remaining matches to eclipse the record.

Connections: Due to the ongoing pandemic Real Salt Lake and Vancouver Whitecaps FC temporarily shared Rio Tinto Stadium as both of their home stadiums. From March through the beginning of August, RSL hosted Whitecaps FC, with the team fully based out of Rio Tinto Stadium and training at America First Field. This will be the first time the two teams face one another since Vancouver returned home to Canada.
