SANDY, Utah (Sat., Sept. 19, 2026) – Real Salt Lake (8-12-5 29 points, 12th West / 22nd MLS Shield) suffered a second consecutive shutout, falling 0-3 to top-ranked Western power Vancouver Whitecaps FC (15-6-4, 49 points, 1st West / 2nd MLS Shield) on Saturday night at America First Field.
For a second consecutive Saturday, RSL went scoreless at home, extending the Claret-and-Cobalt’s home MLS winless streak to five games and overall MLS run without a win to 12 matches, dating back to May 16. The highlight of the difficult evening was undoubtedly the return of former RSL Captain and USMNT standout Emeka Eneli, who returned to the pitch for the first time since RSL’s Wild Card match against Portland on October 22 2025.
RSL Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni made three personnel changes and one positional shift to his starting XI following the 0-2 home loss against New York last Saturday. 22-year-old DF Kobi Henry rejoined the lineup for the fourth time in seven matches at centerback, while recently-acquired MF Colin Guske made his second start with the club, sliding into the midfield next to German-born MF Noel Caliskan.
For the 12th time in 15 matches since the midsummer break, at least one RSL Academy product started, as 19-year-old Aiden Hezarkhani brought creativity and grit. Rounding out the group of changes was Georgian international Saba Lobjanidze, who shifted right to play at the wingback position against the Whitecaps.
Despite the difficult run of form for Real Salt Lake, the home side entered the evening with a determined energy, pushing the ball forward early into the match. In the eighth minute, 2026 RSL Golden Boot leader Sergi Solans earned the squad its first tangible shot on target, forcing the ‘keeper to make the save. Just one minute later, it was the Whitecaps who struck first, finding the back of the net in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead.
While the Claret-and-Cobalt were able to create some offensive opportunities following the conceded goal, it was the defense who continued to thwart the Whitecaps attack. Veteran DF DeAndre Yedlin made a key block, stopping a shot in the 21st minute, while RSL Captain and goalkeeper Rafael Cabral came up with key saves in the first 25 minutes of play.
Unfortunately the pressure once again became too much as Vancouver found the back of the net for a second time in the 29th minute. Despite being down two goals, RSL continued to push on with energy in hopes of getting on the scoresheet. In the 32nd minute, French-born Designated Player Morgan Guilavogui sent a bullet off a shot at goal, forcing the goalkeeper to jump and make a punching save to keep the ball out of the top of the net.
As the second half began, RSL got right to work pushing the ball into the offensive third, earning a tangible scoring opportunity just one minute in. The Claret-and-Cobalt continued to bring pressure, ultimately earning a corner kick in the 54th minute. Lobjanidze sent the ball inside, where it was headed out by the visitors for Yedlin, whose strong shot into the box was deflected to Solans, the Spaniard narrowly missing by hitting the post.
While RSL was able to maintain a higher level of possession, the visitors broke through for a third time in the 63rd minute. Following the score, Eneli entered the pitch, making his long-awaited 2026 season debut and his first appearance since October, 2025, following a knee injury that had seen him miss the entirety of the 2026 MLS season.
While the Claret-and-Cobalt were able to create a slew of offensive chances throughout the match, the home side extended its scoreless run to 194 minutes and counting, while the home winless streak extends to five matches. Real Salt Lake now also has an active MLS streak of 12 straight matches without a win.
Real Salt Lake now hits the road this Wednesday, September 23, to take on the Seattle Sounders. Kickoff for the road match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT and will be streaming on Apple TV. Following the midweek matchup, the Claret-and-Cobalt returns to the Wasatch Front for its fourth Saturday match of September, welcoming Eastern Conference side New England Revolution.
