The wait is finally over. The hype and endless anticipation all comes down to one match, 90 minutes under the lights at America First Field. The Claret-and-Cobalt has battled to build and defend a home stronghold, meeting the ultimate test Wednesday night, welcoming a highly-anticipated matchup against reigning MLS Cup Champion Inter Miami CF.
With a perfect 4-0-0 (W-L-T) record at home so far in 2026, Real Salt Lake heads into the midweek showdown with momentum and confidence. Backed by the relentless energy of the Riot, this squad has reinforced the belief that it can stand toe-to-toe with anyone, including the starpower and championship pedigree of Miami. In this edition of storylines we’ll dive into RSL’s memorable start to 2026 and what can be expected Wednesday night in the marquee showdown between East and West.
RSL Looks to Continue Home Momentum in Midweek Clash
Real Salt Lake heads into Wednesday night following a statement 4-2 win over San Diego FC from the weekend, extending its unbeaten streak to six matches and claiming a perfect 4-0-0 record in Utah soil in 2026. After securing yet another three points in Sandy, RSL’s home dominance remains firmly intact, setting the stage for this blockbuster clash against Inter Miami CF. With early-season standouts and a squad working as a well-oiled machine, RSL will look to prove its early-season form is no fluke but instead a new era for RSL.
The midweek showdown marks the second of three matches for RSL in a rigorous eight-day stretch, the Claret-and-Cobalt closing out the month-long homestand on Wednesday night before heading to Los Angeles to take on LA Galaxy this Sunday, April 26. Even with the tight turnaround, the squad will look to continue its dominance at home to earn an important three points before hitting the road. Dating back to June 2025, head coach Pablo Mastroeni has employed the squad to make America First Field a fortress, compiling an impressive home record of 12-3-2 (W-L-T) since June 1, 2025, the consistency and momentum in Sandy setting RSL up for a positive result against Miami. With a win Wednesday, RSL would start a season 5-0-0 at home for the first time ever, while the 19 points from eight games would set a new standard across RSL’s 22 MLS seasons.
The Claret-and-Cobalt have been firing on all cylinders in 2026, the cohesion of the squad from all sides on full display Saturday night. RSL goalkeeper Rafael Cabral continued to provide his unwavering dedication and relentless energy throughout the entirety of the match, making two clinical saves in the final minutes to keep RSL on top. While the veteran goalkeeper is still in search of his first clean sheet of 2026, the Brazilian provides a massively imposing presence between the posts, the Captain lifting RSL from the goal line all the way up the pitch.
The attacking duo of RSL star Diego Luna and rookie striker Sergi Solans was in full effect against San Diego. Luna has come out swinging, after earning his first start of 2026 back on Saturday, April 4 against rival Sporting Kansas City. In that match, the playmaker wasted no time, netting a goal in the fourth minute to put RSL up 1-0. Against San Diego, Luna did it again. Pressing the goalkeeper in the fifth minute and jumping in front of a poorly-executed pass, finding the back of the net early for a second consecutive week. Just 90 seconds after the goal, Luna tallied a beautiful assist, lifting RSL to a 2-0 lead inside the first 10 minutes of a game for the first time ever.
The return of Luna and his form comes at an opportune time for the Claret-and-Cobalt, looking to continue its home dominance with a win on Wednesday night and send shockwaves across MLS. The 22-year-old was a regular for the U.S. Men’s National Team in 2025, and should his strong form continue, Luna will likely secure a spot on the 2026 FIFA World Cup USA roster.
Along with Luna, the brilliance of rookie striker Solans has empowered RSL’s early form. The UCLA/Oregon State product is enjoying a breakout campaign, netting five goals in five matches this season - the most-ever for an RSL striker in his first five starts - putting him atop the Club's Golden Boot race thus far in 2026. On Saturday night, the Spaniard secured his first-ever brace, both clinical headers that showcased not only aerial ability but high soccer IQ. Solans’ ability to find open space inside the box is remarkable, and at 23 years old, the striker is showcasing all aspects of his game, using speed to press opposing defenses, masterfully connecting with teammates to put the ball in the net and demonstrating a level of selflessness required to be successful in team sports.
Just before halftime, Solans showed just how important making that extra pass can be, receiving the ball and taking it into the box; sitting in a hat trick, the striker could have taken a shot but instead passed the ball wide left to teammate Morgan Guilavogui, whose debut MLS goal put RSL up 4-1. The highly-anticipated score for Guilavogui marked his first in an RSL jersey. For Solans, the assist demonstrated unselfish play, setting up a teammate instead of forcing a shot. The striker will look to continue the strong scoring form over the last five matches, working alongside key attacking pieces of the RSL roster to battle with the reigning MLS Cup Champions.
Wednesday night will carry added meaning for defender DeAndre Yedlin, who is set to face former teammates and club, Inter Miami CF. Yedlin spent two seasons with the dominant Miami side from 2022 to 2024, making 65 appearances for the club and serving as IMFC captain prior to Lionel Messi’s MLS arrival. The two-time World Cup veteran returned to the pitch for the first time Saturday since matchday one in Vancouver after missing time with a leg injury. The defender was originally expected to come off the bench before being thrust into the starting lineup after defender Philip Quinton was an injury scratch during warmups due to a lower leg muscle strain. Now fully back into the mix, Yedlin’s veteran presence will be essential against familiar opposition, as RSL aims to extend its home dominance.
The Reigning Champs Arrive in Sandy
For many RSL fans, the arrival of the 2025 MLS Cup Champions has been at the forefront of conversation for months, now the wait is over as Miami visits Utah for the first time ever, and is set to take the field against RSL Wednesday night. The excitement is palpable but the visitors' sideline will look different than expected with the recent departure of Inter Miami CF coach Javier Mascherano just four months after leading the squad to its first MLS title.
Along with Mascherano, IMFC assistant coach and RSL legend Javier Morales has also stepped away from the club. In what many had hoped would be a return to the field Morales once called home, the former midfielder's departure is all the more bittersweet for supporters who had hoped to see Morales back on the pitch at America First Field. While many questions still remain, one is obvious, will interim head coach Guillermo Hoyos be able to lead the visitors to another victory amidst the noise?
Since its coaching departures, Miami started its Western Conference road trip facing off against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, April 18, in a drama-filled matchup where Inter Miami ultimately ended the day on top with a 3-2 victory. The Rapids fought back from a two-goal deficit, but were no match for the star power of Argentine legend Lionel Messi who scored his second goal of the match in the 79th minute to lift his team to three points. While able to secure the victory, it came at a cost, as Miami defender Yannick Bright was shown a red card in the 88th minute and will now miss Wednesday’s clash against RSL.
The visitors are loaded with attacking depth, led by global icon Messi, who now has scored seven goals on the season. In order to come secure the win at home, Real Salt Lake will look to exploit the loss of Bright in the back while also containing the star-studded attack of Miami, which rosters marquee players like Messi and forwards Luis Suárez and Germán Berterame. While the reigning champions’ offensive depth makes Miami a constant threat, the home side will look to stop any attacking light with high pressure and the grit and determination that has been on display all season.
Along with the starpower of Miami’s attack comes young talent Santiago Morales. Son of RSL legend, Javier Morales, whose name and number are cemented in the “ring of honor” at America First Field. Morales was a force during his 10-year career for RSL, tallying an assist just 40 seconds into his debut for the club and netting 49 goals across 240 appearances, establishing himself as one of the Club’s top threats despite playing a position typically not in record conversations for goals. Now, Morales’ son continues the legacy left by his father.
Before making the move away from Utah, Morales’ son, Santi Morales laced up some boots of his own, facing up against Gozo\\.\\ The two first matched up in Utah’s youth club system before joining forces at the U.S. Boy’s Youth National Team setup. Now part of the Inter Miami system, the younger Morales has progressed through the Club’s academy, signing a first-team contract in 2023 at just 16 years old. In many ways, he is continuing the Morales tradition and will look to step onto the pitch once defended by his father, this time hoping to bring the visiting side victory.
Both clubs have seen success in scoring this season, Miami and RSL each featuring eight different goal scorers in 2026, highlighting just how varied and dangerous the attack can be from both sides. With the depth each club brings, Wednesday’s matchup is likely to come down to which side can better capitalize on its chances in key moments. The highly-anticipated matchup is shaping up to be an electric clash under the lights, where grit, momentum and a moment of brilliance could be all that separates the two sides once the final whistle blows.
