All eyes turn to Sandy this weekend, where the mountains that encapsulate America First Field, a Stadium known for its difficulty to outsiders, is set to welcome fabled rival Sporting Kansas City. The history between the two sides runs deep and holds a mixed-bag of many memories for both teams.
In this edition of Storylines, we break down the storied rivalry between two Western Conference sides who have consistently and continuously battled for points and playoff pushes over the years. Before the history between the two, it is important to take a deeper look into the players leading the charge keeping America First Field a fortress and undefeated in 2026.
RSL’s Key Threats Poised to Protect the Fortress
The stage is set once again at America First Field, for a home side that is not only winning, but re-establishing a strong home fortress. Since June of 2025, RSL has turned its home pitch into one of the toughest environments in the League, posting a commanding 10-3-2 (W-L-T) record. RSL boss Pablo Mastroeni’s squad has brought that same mindset seamlessly into the early 2026 season with a perfect 2-0-0 start at home. With MLS defined by its marathon grind, long travel, quick turnarounds and razor-thin margins, home-field advantage isn’t just important - it’s imperative. With three consecutive April home matches in Utah before heading back out on the road on April 26, the opportunity is more clear than ever to stack points, build confidence and prove that AFF is a place opponents should once again dread.
Fueling RSL’s early-season surge is a blend of new firepower and evolving chemistry. Spanish striker Sergi Solans has wasted no time making his mark, already finding the net twice in his rookie MLS campaign, including a clutch header in the 2-2 draw in San Diego that showcased both his instinct and composure. On the left side, Uruguayan defender Juan Manuel Sanabria has been picture-perfect, dynamic, creative and relentless in linking plays up the field with both Solans and Designated Player Morgan Guilavogui, who has continued to impress with tactical genius and perfectly placed touches that have secured the Frenchman two assists so far this season. Sanabria will be a key missing piece this weekend, due to international duty, with his two assists in the first five matches only beginning to tell the story of his impact, his absence likely leaving a noticeable gap. The door is now open for others on the RSL roster like Greek defenseman Alex Katranis, a fan favorite who brings spirit and willpower to the pitch. He will be eager to step into the match against Kansas City bringing his intensity and powerful left foot with him.
When diving into the RSL roster, one cannot leave out FW Victor Olatunji. The Nigerian striker is a constant disruptor, a menace who turns every defensive possession into his own personal battle. Fresh off of his return from injury, his presence alone has changed the tempo of every game he enters. He presses, harasses and refuses to let defenders settle or have any time at all. Olatunji embodies the relentless spirit of the RSL side and so it felt fitting that he would deliver in a crucial moment, his 85th-minute equalizer on the road in San Diego last game out not only salvaging a critical point but also reinforcing an emerging theme: this team is never out of the fight.
Anchoring it all is RSL goalkeeper Rafael Cabral. The captain and Iron Man of the back. Game after game, he produces moments that feel almost routine yet are anything but. Diving stops, incredible reaction saves and commanding leadership that steadies the entire squad. He is more than an impressive keeper, he’s a safety net and a spark, often keeping RSL within striking distance until the attack finds its breakthrough. The armband suits him, not just for his talent, but for the belief he instills in everyone in front of him.
A word to describe the Claret-and-Cobalt early in the 2026 season can be boiled down to belief. Under Mastroeni, RSL has embraced a mindset built on resilience and refusal. The scoreline is never final until the whistle blows and it has been apparent multiple times thus far. A gritty 2-1 victory over Austin FC on March 14, decided by Dutch midfielder Stijn Spierings’ late drama, becoming RSL’s first-ever substitute debutant to score out of 335 players in 22 seasons, along with the dramatic road result in San Diego last time out, when Olatunji’s late goal flipped leaving in defeat into a valuable point and a statement against a top-tier Western Conference team.
Now with the Wasatch Front as its backdrop and momentum building with every match, Real Salt Lake steps into its next test. The fortress is unrelenting, the energy is rising and the belief within the locker room is real. The only question left is, will anyone be able to break it?
A Deeper Look into RSL’s Intense Rivalry With SKC
Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City share a fiercely competitive history, defined by physical matches and high-stakes showdowns. The Western Conference rivalry reached its pinnacle during MLS Cup 2013, a match played in sub-freezing conditions at Sporting Park, Kansas City, a true test of resilience. After the final whistle blew indicating the end of regulation with the score even at 1-1, SKC edged out RSL after a mind-blowing TWENTY intense penalty kicks during the shootout tiebreaker, leaving a lasting mark on both clubs’ histories. Since then, every encounter between the two sides has carried a “must-win” intensity, often leading to gritty battles and playoff implications on the line.
Since the disappointment of 2013, RSL has seen success against Kansas City, finding key victories against the rival, highlighting the Claret-and-Cobalt ability to rise in key moments. On Decision Day 2021, Real Salt Lake earned a 1-0 victory on the road in crunch time, courtesy of the “Damiracle” in the waning moments of the match. Following the win, RSL faced Seattle in round one of the MLS Playoffs, defeating the home side 6-5 in a shootout, after not registering a single shot on goal, winning on a Justen Glad PK that hit both posts! RSL then revisited Sporting Park to take on Kansas City in the conference semifinal, the visitors bringing the heat once again, defeating SKC 2-1 in comeback fashion to punch its ticket to the Western Conference Final. That playoff victory marks the last occasion that RSL advanced past the first round of the postseason, emphasizing the importance of every time the two sides meet.
RSL carried its momentum against its foes into the 2025 season. After a 1-1 draw in Kansas City on June 28, 2025, the team returned to an energized home crowd to defeat SKC, 2-1, just three months later, reinforcing the home fortress that is America First Field. These results continue to prove RSL’s resilience and tactical strength in the Mastroeni era against its long-standing rival.
Sporting Kansas City enters the 2026 season struggling, currently sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference standings in 15th place with a record of 1-3-1. However, many know, anything can happen especially when facing a rival as heated as this one. Key contributors remain on the roster for SKC, including Designated Players Manu Garcia and Dejan Joveljic along with veteran forward Daniel Salloi and versatile defender Jake Davis. Despite early-season struggles, the visitors will likely bring all it has to its rivals and RSL must prepare to counter.
To continue its winning success at home, the Claret-and-Cobalt must stay true to itself, controlling possession from the back, applying pressure to SKC’s defense and breaking down key attacks. A win would not only provide a valuable three points but also reinforce America First Field’s reputation as a true stronghold, RSL winning nearly 70% of all-time games in Sandy, averaging nearly 2.00 points per game. History suggests that when these two sides meet, every moment is a battle and RSL’s challenge will be to combine the tactical prowess it has shown so far this season with the relentlessness that has defined its success against Sporting Kansas City in recent years.
